Spinal Cord Injuries

Walking is one of the great joys in life that many of us don’t realize until the ability to walk is taken away.  We see our elders walking with canes and walkers, but they are still walking.  What is you cannot walk at all even with a walker?  A life in a wheelchair is devastating, particularly more so when it is caused by the negligence and wrongful act of someone else.  Individuals who are born wheelchair bound do not have the memories of hikes, runs, and daily walks in the neighborhood. Those of us born able to walk are traumatically affected by the loss of this ability.

Why is your spinal cord so important?  The spinal cord contains nerves the run from the base of your brain, down the neck and into the back.  These nerves carry messages to the rest of your body.  The spinal cord is fragile and is only protected by your backbone.  If there is a break in that bone, the spinal cord itself can become damaged beyond repair.  The severity of the damage depends on where the tear in the spinal cord occurred.
